Reform of the Federation White Paper
Local government plays an important role in the Australian system of Government.
The Prime Minister has instigated a White Paper process on the Reform of the Federation and another one on Taxation.
The White Paper processes on the Reform of Federation and Taxation will be an area of significant focus for ALGA through until the end of 2015. ALGA is included in the steering committee overseeing the White Paper process, along with the Secretaries and Chief Executives of the Commonwealth Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and State/Territory First Ministers' departments.
The Terms of Reference for the White Paper on Federation were released on 28 June 2014.
ALGA is actively participating in the White Paper processes and is urging all of local government to do the same to ensure the existing partnership between the Commonwealth and local government is preserved.
The first issues paper, A Federation for our Future was released on 12 September 2014.

Issues Paper 2, Roles and Responsibilities in Housing and Homelessness was released on 11 December 2014.
Issues Paper 3, Roles and Responsibilities in Health was released on 11 December 2014.
Issues Paper 4, Roles and Responsibilities in Education was released on 23 December 2014.
Issues Paper 5, COAG and Federal Financial Relations was released on 4 February 2015.
A Green Paper canvassing reform options is expected to be released in the second half of 2015, with the White Paper expected to be delivered in the run up to the Federal election.
