Local government has a keen interest in matters affecting the public sector, both because it is a public sector employer in its own right (employing around 172,000 or around 10 per cent, of Austrlia's total public sector) and because it is a key stakeholder in the decisions taken by each of the other two levels of government in Austrlia.
