Government and Opposition respond to drought

Both the Government and Federal Opposition have made announcements in recent days to address the impact of the drought on rural communities.  In addition to the earlier announced increase in payments through the Farm Household Allowance Scheme, Deputy PM Michael McCormack announced that funding for Roads to Recovery projects will be brought forward in towns in drought affected areas. At the same time the Opposition announced that if it wins office at the next election it will establish a $20m Regional Economic Fund to be used to stimulate drought affected local economies through partnering with councils on local projects.
