Reform of the Federation White Paper

Local government plays an important role in the Australian system of Government.

The Prime Minister has instigated a White Paper process on the Reform of the Federation and another one on Taxation.

The White Paper processes on the Reform of Federation and Taxation will be an area of significant focus for ALGA through until the end of 2015.  ALGA is included in the steering committee overseeing the White Paper process, along with the Secretaries and Chief Executives of the Commonwealth Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and State/Territory First Ministers' departments.

The Terms of Reference for the White Paper on Federation were released on 28 June 2014.

ALGA is actively participating in the White Paper processes and is urging all of local government to do the same to ensure the existing partnership between the Commonwealth and local government is preserved.

The first issues paper,  A Federation for our Future was released on 12 September 2014.
