ALGA confirmed as partner of Stop Food Waste Australia

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has become
a partner of a new food waste governance body, Stop Food Waste Australia.

The new national food waste governance consortium will lead food waste reduction initiatives across the food supply chain in support of the National Food Waste Strategy, which aims to halve Australia’s food waste by 2030.

In 2020, the federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) announced it was seeking partners for Stop Food Waste Australia, and that the entity will be led by Fight Food Waste Limited (FFWL) with The Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP UK).

Stop Food Waste Australia will:

  • implement the Australian Food Pact, a voluntary agreement to bring organisations and individuals from across the food supply chain together, to commit to reducing their food waste;
  • develop new, and implement existing, sector action plans to identify and deliver sector-specific projects to reduce food waste; and
  • drive collaboration among the food supply chain and governments, including through an online platform that will showcase case studies, news and a curated communications hub.

As a priority, Stop Food Waste Australia will deliver Target 2.1 of the 2019 National Waste Policy Action Plan to establish a “voluntary commitment program for businesses across the supply and consumption chain to engage in food waste reduction activities and to encourage industry-led action”.

The NFWP will also be responsible for a range of other food waste reduction activities including developing sector action plans, stimulating active stakeholder engagement and key data reporting.

Fight Food Waste Limited (FFWL) is a commercially focussed and industry-led organisation whose vision is to achieve an Australia without food waste.

Its main targets are to reduce food waste in Australia by 30 million tonnes and increase industry profitability by $2 billion by 2033 through integrating research, development and extension provided by the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (FFW CRC)  to assist its participants to achieve their food waste reduction goals.
