The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) congratulates and welcomes the new federal minister responsible for local government, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie.
Senator McKenzie was appointed Minister for Regional Services, Sport, Local Government and Decentralisation in the recent announcement of Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s new ministry.
ALGA President, Mayor David O’Loughlin, said he looked forward to building on the already strong relationship that exists between the Commonwealth and local government with Senator McKenzie at the helm.
“Local government is a vital and willing partner with the Commonwealth in sustaining local communities,” he said.
“A strong partnership between the Federal and local government ensures essential services to our communities are maintained and that national policies reflect the diversity of communities across urban, rural, regional and remote Australia.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Government to improve the resilience of local communities, and continue growing the economy, delivering jobs, and helping support regional development.”
Mayor O’Loughlin also thanked outgoing local government minister, the Hon Dr John McVeigh.
“I would also like to recognise and extend my personal thanks to Dr John McVeigh for his great work and his accomplishments for local government while in office,” he said.
“The sector is grateful to Dr McVeigh for his dedicated service and support, and we wish him all the best in his future.”
