ARRB working to boost uptake of new materials in SA roads

A recycled materials assessment project has begun in South Australia with the aim of building local councils’ confidence in the use of recycled materials.

The Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) was engaged by Green Industries South Australia (GISA) to undertake the project, which involves compiling a “knowledge capture” of innovative and sustainable pavement materials.

Following that, ARRB will develop a systematic and customised assessment and implementation framework. This will include case studies and the environmental implications of incorporating recycled materials into SA road infrastructure.

To identify the barriers and opportunities for local councils to increase their uptake of recycled materials, the ARRB recently conducted a survey examining waste stream analysis, specifications and standards, environmental implications, and procurement and funding.
