ATHA looks to boost tiny houses in local government areas

A guide to support approvals of tiny houses in local government areas has been published by the Australian Tiny House Association.

The Local Planning Policy Template is intended for use by planning and building officers and is proposed to:

  • identify the circumstances where a tiny house or tiny house community may be permitted;
  • provide a simple framework against which tiny house can be assessed; and
  • outline standard requirements for all tiny houses to comply with related regulations.

A tiny house is defined as a dwelling of no more than 50 square metres which is built on a wheeled trailer base. It is designed and built to look like a conventional dwelling and is not intended to be moved under its own power.

The ATHA has also published a list of frequently asked questions to support the Planning Policy Template.

Jurisdiction-relevant regulations, codes and rules can also be found on its website.
