National Road Safety Week is an initiative of Safer Australian Highways and Roads (SARAH) Group, founded by President Peter Frazer following the tragic death of his daughter Sarah, who was killed in a roadside crash on the Hume Highway in 2012.
In March this year, the ALGA President, David O’Loughlin and Peter Frazer sent a joint letter asking Councils to get involved in National Road Safety Week. The response has been fantastic so far with Councils committing for example, to light up significant land marks, have a minute’s silence to acknowledge those who have lost loved ones in road crashes, placing yellow ribbons on cars and plant machinery and promoting Drive so Others Survive through social media.
This year’s theme builds recognition that everyone, individually and collectively, can be a leader for road safety – through our own behaviour, by serving as role models, by supporting those affected by road trauma, and by sharing the road safety message.
