Free webinar heralds new Emergency Planning Handbook

The 2020 edition of the Emergency Planning Handbook is being launched next week with a webinar featuring leading experts discussing preparedness principles and practice.

The new handbook provides nationally agreed principles for good practice in emergency planning and reflects changes in the field of disaster risk reduction, emergency management and more broadly in society since the publication of the previous Emergency Planning Manual (2004).

There are new approaches to disaster risk reduction, resilience, recovery, public, private and not-for-profit partnerships, community engagement, shared responsibility, catastrophic, cascading, and concurrent events, emergent capability and capacity, and lessons management.

Among the guest speakers at the 29 October webinar are David Parsons and Kirsten Tanner.

Mr Parsons is a visiting fellow with the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University in New Zealand and a founding member of Response and Recovery Aotearoa New Zealand, while Ms Tanner is the Emergency Management Coordinator for the Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

Amanda Leck (executive director of the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience) and Helen Foster (chief risk and resilience officer at the Bureau of Meteorology) will also be speaking at the 60-minute event.
