The Federal Government has created a new industry group to advise the Department of Agriculture about current and emerging biosecurity threats and Australia’s national and international obligations.
Biosecurity Futures features an initial eight members from entities including the Freight and Trade Alliance, Australian Pork Limited, and the Tourism and Transport Forum.
“This group was one of the eight recommendations put forward to me by the Biosecurity Imports Levy Industry Steering Committee in June this year,” Agriculture Minister, Sen. Bridget McKenzie, said.
Close cooperation between government and industry was essential to stay a step ahead of global threats like African swine fever, she added, which the Minister said could wipe out Australia’s pig industry and the 36,000 jobs the industry supports.
Minister McKenzie will chair the group, whose volunteer members will serve a nominal 24 months.
