LG workforce rises to 191,000 during last financial year

There were 190,800 people working in local government at the end of June 2021, new Bureau of Statistics figures show.

This is about 4800 more people than were employed at the same time in 2020.

Of those people employed in local government in 2021, 54,900 were in NSW, 52,300 in Victoria, 43,300 in Queensland, 10,700 in South Australia, 22,600 in WA, 4100 in Tasmania, and 2800 in the Northern Territory.

Across all levels of government, there were 2,100,800 public sector employees at the end of June 2021.

Of those, 247,600 worked in Commonwealth government, and 1,662,400 in state government.

In June 2020, the ABS estimated that there were 2,041,200 people employed in the public sector, with 186,000 people in local government.
