Now is the right time to go, says champion of women in LG

Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) president Coral Ross will not stand for re-election at the Victorian local government elections on 24 October.

After more than 18 years as a councillor for the City of Boroondara, including three terms as mayor, Cr Ross said this week that now is the right time to stand aside.

She was elected president of the MAV in March 2019 and has served as a board member of the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA).

Cr Ross has been a strong advocate for women in local government, serving as national president of Australian Local Government Women’s Association, deputy chair of the Australian Gender Equality Council, and a director of the National Rural Women’s Coalition.

In 2018, Cr Ross was awarded the prestigious Churchill Fellowship to investigate improving gender equality in local councils, and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.

She will remain in her role at the MAV until the council elections are held.
