National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces – invitation to make a submission

Councils have been invited to make a submission to the National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces.

Information about the National Inquiry, and the full Terms of Reference, can be found on the Australian Human Rights Commission’s website.

Councils are in a unique position to provide valuable insights to the inquiry on the particular workplace experience of elected councillors and local government staff such as:

  • experiences and impacts of workplace sexual harassment of elected councillors and local government staff
  • challenges and opportunities for local government associations in addressing workplace sexual harassment
  • the adequacy of the current legal framework to enable local government associations to effectively respond to workplace sexual harassment
  • best practice approaches for local government associations to prevent and respond to workplace sexual harassment
  • case studies, data and research collected by the ALGA that relate to workplace sexual harassment.

The closing date for submissions is 28 February 2019 and submissions can be made via the Commission’s website.

The website also provides news and updates about the inquiry, instructions for making online submissions, and details of public consultations that are being held across Australia.
