National product stewardship scheme offering $14m in grants

Grants of up to $1 million are being offered by the Commonwealth to support the establishment of new product stewardship schemes or to expand existing ones.

$14 million has been made available for this National Product Stewardship Investment Fund grant opportunity.

Product stewardship schemes help reduce waste and prevent harmful materials ending up in landfill by increasing recycling and the materials recovery – and they have been identified as a key strategy to reach targets set out in the 2018 National Waste Policy and the 2019 National Waste Policy Action Plan.

Product stewardship schemes supported by the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund are expected to have, or develop, a national reach.

This will improve services and opportunities available for regional and remote areas, and reduce landfill costs for local and state governments.

Grants will be available to cover project costs from $300,000 to $1 million over the next three years, with applications closing on 21 August.

Applications are open to not-for-profit organisations, industry associations and private sector organisations that are seeking to develop a business case, design or implement a new product stewardship scheme, or expand the reach of an existing scheme.
