Simon Atkinson has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, which has responsibility for Local Government.
Mr Atkinson was most recently a Deputy Secretary in the Treasury. His former senior roles include helping establish the Infrastructure Australia agency.
The Australian Logistics Council said Mr Atkinson’s experience with Infrastructure Australia means he can hit the ground running.
“He will acutely understand the importance of long-term planning beyond political cycles in order to deliver the quality freight infrastructure and regulatory reforms Australia needs to deal with its increasing population and a growing freight task,” Council CEO Kirk Coningham said.
Meanwhile, David Fredericks has been named the new Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Energy, having previously been a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Finance, and has also served as a Deputy Secretary in the Attorney-General’s Department.
Both appointments are for five years and began on 11 November, the Prime Minister said.
