New LGNSW president to work with ALGA on FA grants issue

Darriea Turley has pledged to make Financial Assistance Grants a priority during her term as president of Local Government NSW.

The Broken Hill City Council Mayor was elected LGNSW president on the first weekend of December after a postal vote by association members.

Cr Turley will head up eight other returning Board members and nine who replaced outgoing members of the former Board led by City of Sydney Cr Linda Scott.

Cr Turley said she will collaborate with the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) to address the shortfall in FA Grants and to advocate for constitutional recognition of local government.

Her other priorities will include:

  • A new, stronger intergovernmental agreement with the NSW government, to ensure both tiers of government worked together as equal partners for the benefit of NSW communities;
  • An annual rural/regional summit focused on overcoming the unique challenges faced by rural and regional councils; and
  • Building a strong, transparent and accountable peak body for councils, focused on delivering real member value by driving positive outcomes for communities.

“I’m looking forward to chairing a great Board and working collaboratively with my fellow directors to achieve real and meaningful outcomes for NSW councils and the communities they serve,” Cr Turley said.

Cr Turley has been a Broken Hill City councillor for more than 20 years, and mayor since 2016.
