Townsville City Council has set itself a new target of spending 3 percent of its procurement budget with local First Nation businesses to bring it into line with State and Federal Government procurement policies.
Governance and Finance Committee Chair Cr Verena Coombe said the goal complements the Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan and should help build Indigenous businesses.
“We’re looking to increase our spend to 3 percent in the next five years with the help of an Indigenous Panel that will provide opportunities that may not have been presented to these businesses originally,” Cr Coombe said.
The tender to establish a Register of Prequalified Indigenous Suppliers closes on 2 October and applicants can register at www.tenderlink.com/townsville .
The Council held an Indigenous Business Fair earlier this which showcased more than 30 businesses.
Meanwhile, Supply Nation and the National Indigenous Australians Agency is continuing its series of Indigenous Business Trade Fairs in capitals across the country, including Brisbane on 1 October, Perth on 29 October and Darwin on 8 November.
